Answer: Introduction Enrolling for engineering means all of us have to face the machine workshop, the mechanical engineers have to face it all the time but all of the other departments have to face it once in their course study. There is nothing fearful of the workshop, but you have to follow certain guidelines to work efficiently in the workshop without getting hurt, for that you have to follow certain safety rules to avert yourself from harm and work diligently in the workshop and get the task complete within the given time, so for the disasters that prevail in the workshop, there are some remedies that the student can follow to get the job done without facing it (Calder Watkins, 2007). So to avoid the disaster management certain, certain task have to be followed which are give as follows:- Identifying the type of disaster, and discussion of its remedies; The hazards in the workshops will be like the ones I am describing below Turning area- The turning area consists of the lathes and it may be the manual lathe or the CNC type of machinery but the working environment out there are posing a risk on the well being of the students who are enrolled for the machining workshops which are designated for their course but the working area needs some risk assessment during the operational tasks are done so that the health and safety students are not affected by the rough working environment which is present at the workshop and they can carry out their work in peace and for that reason the type of disasters are identified as follow. Storing of the tools and the operational turning cutters which are needed during the machining operations at the lathes and for that reason the storing of the tools and the turning cutters should be there in place and not in undesignated places, as they can pose a threat on the safety of the amateur students working at the workshops (Li, 2005). The mishandling of things is another part in the turning area of the workshop and for that reason the risk remains unidentified because the mishandling of things can appear at any instance of time and for that reason the handling of the things at the workshops should be carried out efficiently, because the most recent of it I found on the walkway, when I found a cleaning brush laying out there without nobodys concern. Locker room area-The locker room area should be the safest place for the students where they can prepare and gear up for their course at the machining workshop but the locker room area also consists of some kind of risk that can be prevented at the primary level to reduce the disasters that can be caused during the course hours at the workshops and for that reason the workshop staff at the Lincoln college should look after these risks at the locker rooms of the machining workshop so that no hazards rise up during the course process because it is considered to be the safest place for the student. The risk in the locker room can be identified as such The locker rooms are spared as the storing area for the workshop equipments and other stuff from the workshop, like the ones that we found recently during the recent times at the workshops when the wooded blocks we stored on top of the lockers and that is not safe enough for the students because regular use of the lockers increases the vibrations and that may induce the wooden blocks to fall on their heads. The storing of the machining tools and equipments very near to the locker rooms is also very risky to endure during the working hours at the workshops because the only area where the students do not care about the risk is the locker room and being casual around such equipments could cause the students to embrace some disasters (McNamee, 1998). The Milling area- The milling areas another metal cutting area where the material removal rate is high compared to the machining area as the milling cutters are used to produce gears and other stuffs like that which require greater material removal rate and for that reason the area of the workshop around the milling area can be a source of hazard for the students working out there and therefore area should be checked of all the risk causing attributes present. Some of the risks that I identified are based on these factors The milling cutters are stored in an incorrect manner where they are placed alongside their machining equipments and for that reason a clash of the machinery may occur or the operator may give rise to certain disasters that are not necessary and it may affect the students who are working on the machining and the milling equipments simultaneously. The mishandling of the attributes needed during the working hours at the milling area can also affect the students health like the open hull of the oil cans needed for the lubrication of the milling cutters, these open oil cans can affect the students health where they can fall down unwontedly without any working and the falling chances on the tools or any other equipment is not that far. How to prevent the hazards The risks that are involved in the working process of the workshop during the course of the students can be prevented and the safety of the students can be promised during their working hours at the college and for that reason the preventing measures can be place like the following Preventing measures at the turning shop: As we have mentioned above the main types of risks are segregated in two pieces of risk assessment and they are the risk of handling of the tools and the attributes that are used in the area, the tools and the equipments of the turning area of the workshop can be stored in some place safe away from the reach of the students and for that reason the workshop authority and the college administration should plan out a storing area for the equipments at the workshop and the proper handling of the stuffs used during the operation and the measures if performed can give rise to a safe environment for the students working out there (Glantz Doorley, 2000). The Preventing measures at the Locker room area: The locker room area of the workshop is the only area where the students maintain a casual attitude and the environment around the locker room area should be safe enough for the students to maintain that attitude and the college authorities should take measures to provide them with the facilities that they require and for that reason the unwanted storing of the working equipments in the locker room area must be prevented and the proper storing of the equipments should be maintained in order to safely guard the locker room area from any kind of risk. The storing of the machining equipments around the locker room area must be highly prevented because they pose the higher level of threats. The preventing measures at the milling area: The milling area is the area of the workshop where the maximum amount of the material removal rate is encountered during the machining processes carried out at the workshop and for that reason the maximum amount of safety precautions should be applied at that area because the maximum amount of material gets removed in the milling operation of making gears and other stuffs like that, so for the milling area to stay secure enough for the students, different preventing measures for the students should be endorsed in order to provide the students with the maximum probability of safety (Koller, 1999). The safety issues may be like storing the milling equipments in the proper place in order to prevent mishandling and unwanted disaster issues, maintaining the equipments used in the milling operation like the oil cans and the other stuff like the tools and other stuff, the safe guards provided at the workshop must be big enough to cover all the eq uipments. The risk assessment for the workshop of Lincoln college Milling Area Risks: My objective is to present a risk assessment procedure for a particular work area ij the workshop and for that reason I have to choose the area according to the parameters that I am going to discuss in this part of the topic, now here I am going to talk about the risk assessment process carried out in the milling area of the workshop where the maximum amount of material removal rate is observed under the light of the milling operation, because the milling area endures the making of gears and stuff like that where the material removal rate is higher compare to the turning operation carried out in the other part of the workshop and for that reason the higher level of risk assessment is needed in this part of the milling area. Measures to prevent them The milling are should always maintain the safest procedures in hand to serve the students with the knowledge of milling operation in accordance with safest procedures engraved to maintain safe working conditions and for that reason the safety measures like the storage and the handling of the equipments at the workshop should be maintained in order to provide safe working conditions (Suter Barnthouse, 1993). Procedures to minimize the above mentioned risks (Milling Area risk assessment) As we have mentioned above, all the risks that are caused in a machine shop are very common in nature but very hazardous in their effect, so the remedies or the procedures to remove such risks are entitled below (Hester Harrison, 1998). Maintenance of the work place- The well being of the workplace should be maintained keeping all things at priority level, if theres a fault in the workplace like damaged machinery and stuff it may become the cause of disaster for the students as well as for the instructors, so the college authority should take all measures needed to maintain the workshop and keep a check on all the safety measures involved in keeping the workshop a better place to work in. Supervision over the students- The students should be supervised properly when they are present at the workshop, because the students are still under their course and officially they do not know anything, so proper care should be taken so that no harm is caused to any student during their hours at the workshop, the instructor should be highly advised by the college authorities that they should take care of every student working in the college workshop, the instructors should also keep a watch on how they work and what tools they use to work with and whether they know everything about the tool. Prevent the students from going near the machine parts vulnerable to cause them harm- This falls under the instructors duties to teach everything about a machine to the student so that mistakenly they do not hover around the areas that could cause them harm. A message about the unwanted material from a nearby lathe, near my locker This is a fictional message about some unwanted particles coming out from the lathe near my locker in the machine shop in writing to the tutor. Sir, the locker that was assigned to me in the machine workshop has some issues related with it, the lathe situated near my locker has some material coming out of it, may be it has some issues because whenever I go near my locker I find something on the ground or on the locker, I didnt think It was a good sign so I thought of forwarding this issue to you in writing, as I think the colleges maintenance department has not seen this stuff or the lathe has been ignored for a certain amount of time, I hope you will problem to the higher authorities, and find a remedy as soon as possible. We have to state 6 risk control protocols here and how each of the principles take its effect Instructions from the concerned instructors-All the instructions from the instructor assigned, should be followed and the work should be carried out accordingly, so that no disaster control should bring in its use. Proper machinery-The machinery that are provided at the workshop should be checked under all preferred protocols so that no faulty machinery find its way into the workshop as it may prove to be very harmful and cause some serious disaster issues. Proper clothing gear- The proper clothing gear should be maintained at any cost because sometime a meager procedure can save the day. Avoid nuisance in the work place- The instructor should be so advised that he can control any kind of nuisance in the workshop coming in from the students as it may cause serious injuries. Avoid use of attributes-All kind of stools and other attributes should be discarded as any mishap can occur due to them, as they are not permanent. Do not let the student operate on his/her own- The student should be properly taught about the concerned machine before engaging them into work, a should never let them operate the machine on their before knowing. Conclusion The college authority of Lincoln college should try out everything it its power to maintain the machine workshop at a proper condition, and should make use of all the measures available to make the place safe for the students and let them work without any worry of harm, they should take care of every machine installed in the workshop, and maintain its well being because the well being of the student depends on it which also indirectly serves itself to the reputation of the college, so the college should always try to make sure of the well being of the student working at the machine shop so that the they dont get hurt and there comes no situation where the college has to call in the damage control procedures, when it is said that prevention is better than cure. If this is not done, the world could face severe physical problems to living species living on this planet. Some atoms can disintegrate spontaneously. As they do, they emit ionizing radiation. Atoms having this property are called radioactive. By far the greatest number of uses for radioactivity in Canada relate not to the fission, but to the decay of radioactive materials - radioisotopes. These are unstable atoms that emit energy for a period of time that varies with the isotope. During this active period, while the atoms are 'decaying' to a stable state their energies can be used according to the kind of energy they emit. Since the mid 1900's radioactive wastes have been stored in different manners, but since several years new ways of disposing and storing these wastes have been developed so they may no longer be harmful. A very advantageous way of storing radioactive wastes is by a process called 'vitrification'. Vitrification is a semi-continuous process that enables the following operations to be carried out with the same equipment: evaporation of the waste solution mixed with the 1) borosilicate: any of several salts derived from both boric acid and silicic acid and found in certain minerals such as tourmaline. additives necesary for the production of borosilicate glass, calcination and elaboration of the glass. These operations are carried out in a metallic pot that is heated in an induction furnace. The vitrification of one load of wastes comprises of the following stages. The first step is 'Feeding'. In this step the vitrification receives a constant flow of mixture of wastes and of additives until it is 80% full of calcine. The feeding rate and heating power are adjusted so that an aqueous phase of several litres is permanently maintained at the surface of the pot. The second step is the 'Calcination and glass evaporation'. In this step when the pot is practically full of calcine, the temperature is progressively increased up to 1100 to 1500 C and then is maintained for several hours so to allow the glass to elaborate. The third step is 'Glass casting'. The glass is cast in a special container. The heating of the output of the vitrification pot causes the glass plug to melt, thus allowing the glass to flow into containers which are then transferred into the storage. Although part of the waste is transformed into a solid product there is still treatment of gaseous and liquid wastes. The gases that escape from the pot during feeding and calcination are collected and sent to ruthenium filters, condensers and scrubbing columns. The ruthenium filters consist of a bed of ------------------------------------------------------------ 2) condensacate: product of condensation. glass pellets coated with ferrous oxide and maintained at a temperature of 500 C. In the treatment of liquid wastes, the condensates collected contain about 15% ruthenium. This is then concentrated in an evaporator where nitric acid is destroyed by formaldehyde so as to maintain low acidity. The concentration is then neutralized and enters the vitrification pot. Once the vitrification process is finished, the containers are stored in a storage pit. This pit has been designed so that the number of containers that may be stored is equivalent to nine years of production. Powerful ventilators provide air circulation to cool down glass. The glass produced has the advantage of being stored as solid rather than liquid. The advantages of the solids are that they have almost complete insolubility, chemical inertias, absence of volatile products and good radiation resistance. The ruthenium that escapes is absorbed by a filter. The amount of ruthenium likely to be released into the environment is minimal. Another method that is being used today to get rid of radioactive waste is the 'placement and self processing radioactive wastes in deep underground cavities'. This is the disposing of toxic wastes by incorporating them into molten silicate rock, with low permeability. By this method, liquid wastes are injected into a deep underground cavity with mineral treatment and allowed to self-boil. The resulting steam is processed at ground level and recycled in a closed system. When waste addition is terminated, the chimney is allowed to boil dry. The heat generated by the radioactive wastes then melts the surrounding rock, thus dissolving the wastes. When waste and water addition stop, the cavity temperature would rise to the melting point of the rock. As the molten rock mass increases in size, so does the surface area. Firstly the number of bonds to be broken and made and secondly the type of bonds involved. Therefore from the preliminary work I can see that propanol has similar type bonds to ethanol, but it has more of them. This means that proponal will use more energy to break the bonds and; therefore more energy will be released to make more new bonds. Also, the greater the surface area and the greater the force of attraction between the molecules, will make it harder to vaporise. Therefore more energy will be released. Fair Test I would like to gain the most reliable results possible using the equipment and conditions provided; therefore I will have to consider certain factors, which if I do not control, may enforce my results to become less reliable. I will, * Keep a constant water temperature at the beginning. * Keep the distance of the copper can away from the flame at 5cm. * Have a constant water mass. * Keep the temperature from which the experiment is terminated fairly constant. * Stir the water with the thermometer before each temperature reading, which will distribute the heat evenly. Results Fuel Mass of Fuel Used Average Ethanol Analysis I will use the averages for ethanol and propanol to work out the total energy transfer and then I will use this to find the mass of fuel burnt per mole. The workings below show what I found out and what this suggests. Ethanol Q = M x C x t The letter Q is the energy in joules and what I want to find out, M is the volume of water in the copper can, C is the specific heat capacity of water and At is the rise in temperature during the experiment. All of these were kept the same throughout the experiment; therefore, M = 100cm3 C = 4. 2 t = 200C This gives the equation,Heat produced. The mass of ethanol burnt is 1. 4g and the relative molecular mass is 46, which I have already worked out previously. In order to work out the number of moles in 8400KJ I will use the equation, Number of Moles = mass/Relative Molar Mass If I put these numbers into the equation to give, Moles of ethanol burnt = 1. 4g/46 = 0. 03 moles. I will then use this to calculate the energy in one mole, 8400/0. 03 = 280000J = -280KJ Propanol I will use the same equation using the same numbers as before as they were kept the same in this experiment as well. This should give,Heat ProducedThe mass of propanol burnt is 1g and the relative molecular mass of propanol is 60, which I again worked out beforehand in my plan. I will use the equation, Number of Moles = mass/Relative Molar Mass I will put the numbers in the equation appropriately to give, Moles of propanol burnt The above figure can be used to work out the energy in one mole0KJ I did not use 0. 4 for the propanol average, because it does not follow the general trend; therefore it is anomalous. If I had included this result it may have affected my results slightly. The results that I obtained clearly show that the propanol did have the greatest energy loss; therefore my prediction was correct and theoretically my preliminary work was very successful in helping me gain the correct prediction. This is shown whereby for ethanol the energy give out per mole is -280KJ, whereas propanol gives out a slightly bigger -420KJ. From this experiment I have learnt that if there are too many carbon atoms present in a fuel then the energy given out as heat through combustion is increased, whereas if there are too few carbon atoms then the energy given out as heat from combustion decreases. If I compare my results with my preliminary work there is an immense difference in figures, whereby for ethanol the energy produced from one mole using the scientific figures is -1031KJ, whereas my results show that there is -420KJ of energy released. Also the scientific results for propanol are -2076, whereas my results show that for proponal -420KJ of energy was released. This significant difference was probably due to the extreme mass of heat loss during the experiment from the copper can, the spirit burner and the water; therefore less heat was transferred to energy. Also average bond energies shown in the data book were taken at 250C, whereas I took my results at a temperature of 200C, which means that a higher temperature the molecules would have had more energy as the bigger the temperature the faster the reaction; therefore more energy would have been transferred as heat after the breaking and making of the bonds. Evaluation I think that my experiment was fairly successful considering the limited equipment and conditions, as I managed to gain a set of fairly reliable results in order to draw a firm conclusion. There was only one anomalous result, which happened when testing the propanol whereby there was a result of 0. 4; therefore I did not include this in my average taking. This could have occurred for a number of reasons these are, The amount of water put into the can may not have been measured completely accurately because of the way the level of the water is seen in the measuring cylinder.   There may have not been a totally consistent height above the spirit burner. The spirit burner was not covered up during experiment; therefore the fuel could have evaporated. The length of the wick varied.   Heat could have escaped out of the sides of the spirit burner during combustion.   The copper can meant that it absorbed and transferred heat well but it lost heat to the air as well. These reasons could have had an slight effect on my results overall, whereby it will have made my results lower than the theretical results, as shown in my analysis. If I were to do this experiment again I would, Weigh the water in the copper can using burette instead of a measuring cylinder. Measure the distance between the can and the sprit burner between each fuel burnt.   Cut the wick to the same length after each fuel is burnt.   Insulate the copper can at the sides. User a Bomb Calorimeter so that draughts can be prevented and so that there is restrictions to the heat lost. The diagram below shows what the bond calorimeter would look like and how it would be set up. I think that despite the problems that occurred I still managed to gain a fairly reliable set of results in order to imply whether the energy loss for ethanol or propanol was bigger. If I were to experiment further I could experiment with a much wider range of fuels to see whether their energy loss is bigger then propanol. Also I could investigate other factors that affect the energy loss from combustion, such as, the length of the wick, the heat source and the heat capacity. In doing this I can broaden my understanding in this section of chemistry. While it may seem that this strong emotion can go on and on, it will dissipate in time and healing starts to set in. So when someone is angry due to a loss, it is advisable to just let the person rant on because suppressing it will only delay the natural healing process that the grieving person is unconsciously seeking for (Kubler et al, n.d.). The third stage is bargaining. This phase is characterized by asking the question â€Å"What if?† The â€Å"ifs† is the grieving person’s way of saying that he or she really just wants to remain in the past. It is a feeling that craves for the normal pattern of life the person was used to. It is also means to cover the guilty feeling of being alive, while his or her loved one has passed away (Kubler et al, n.d.). After bargaining, the grief stricken individual enters the fourth stage which is depression. This emotion must not be interchanged with the mental disorder depression since losing somebody to death is naturally depressing. Having a mental disorder of depression on the other hand is being saddened or dismayed for no particular reason at all. Depression is a normal feeling a person will have after the death of a loved one that will normally be forgotten after sometime when the healing process is completed (Kubler et al, n.d.). The fifth stage is acceptance. When reality really settles down, a person does not have any choice except to go on for there is nothing anyone can do to change what has happened in the past. While it may seem that the dead loved one is being betrayed by having to live on and continue to enjoy life; the fact is that life must go on. Ethics people Essay The question of ethics is particularly important for a person who is both part of society and works with a group. The development of community and collective self is impossible without the struggle of opposing ideas and positions, and the collision of different points of views and opinions through which it is possible to overcome contradictions and disagreements. The relationship within a team works in a â€Å"mirror-system† where members can see their behavior reflected in their interaction with other people. An example of this can be seen when group members introduce themselves to each other. Usually, group members gauge how they will act depending on how the first person introducing will make them feel. If they feel comfortable with the personality of that person, they will also act naturally. However, if they feel threatened or intimidated, they will also exhibit signs of such. Understanding this particular group dynamic is important in maintaining relationships in the workplace. Once members understand this, they start to create their own group values/culture of which good ethics is a foundation. The presence of group ethics and values can lead to the success of a group especially in diffusing conflicts to maintain decorum and maintain work ethic (Green 2006). I want to point out an experience I had in which I acted unethically within a group. This instance happened last semester when I took a class in Entrepreneurship and got into an argument with a groupmate while planning for a project entitled â€Å"Blue Ocean Strategy†. I was trying to convince him that my side was right. I was on the verge of tears that I raised my voice and walked out on him, slamming the door as I left. In retrospect, I realized that I reacted unethically to the situation. Since I was part of a team, my actions disrupted the group and affected our work ethic. But what was I to do? Keep quiet even though I had a good suggestion for the group? Let my idea be discarded without me fighting for it? I have tried to justify my actions as a way for me to assert myself, to make my groupmate realize that I was trying to contribute to the group. This, however, did not change the fact that my outburst affected my groups opinion of me. Now I understand that to act ethically is to act calmly in resolving conflicts. In defending my ideas, I have to be careful to exude confidence calmly and not arrogantly. Being aggressive and arrogant creates a negative feeling within the group. It is also important to choose words carefully when dragged into a conflict. It is even better if I keep my silence even if my groupmate is goading me. I should calm myself and wait for my partner to calm down too before we try and solve the problem. The Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu in his book The Art of War shared that it is best to win without fighting (Tzu 1). Thus, the real winner of any conflict is the one who is able to prevent it from the start. It is an important exercise to weigh factors first before getting into a conflict. â€Å"What have I got to gain? To lose? †, â€Å"Will these actions lead to a solution for the group or for myself? † These are the questions that I will ask myself before I confront any one, not just members of my group. Conflicts will always arise whenever people get together. What is important is how the group will move together to resolve such issues. Even though groups move in different contexts, whether political, social, industrial or domestic, the strategies to conflict management are grounded on one, same idea. With such a large multinational corporation, greater planning and more use of strategies should be pursued. Sony could start with the implementation of a new mission statement, with profit and benefits of the company tied more closely to everyday operations. Internally, the four forces, the management, the designers, the production and the marketing should achieve better communication and cooperation. The conclusion is that change is needed in Sony. However,even with strategirial and structure change, the Sony spirit of innovation should remain intact because that is what made Sony grow and would make it stay strong. Did Lizzie Borden Commit Murder

A little over a century ago an atrocious double murder was committed, in the two-half story house at 92 Second Street, in Fall River, Massachusetts. This crime shocked the city of Fall River, as well as the nation, as Lizzie Borden, a 32-year-old Sunday school teacher, went on trial for the murder of her father and her stepmother. (Augustine). An all male jury eventually acquitted her on the accusations. (Aiuto). To this day, the murderer of Andrew J. Borden and Abby Gray Borden is still unknown, but in the public mind everyone believes it was Lizzie Borden.Lizzie was born and grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was the youngest daughter of Andrew Jackson Borden, who was a very successful Banker and Sarah Borden. Sarah died when Lizzie was very young and Andrew then married Abby Durfee Gray. Lizzie grew up with an elder sister, Emma. Neither of them ever married. It is said the sisters hated their stepmother, mainly because of the family’s inferior social position. (Hist ory Channel). Many of the wealthier houses at the time had electricity and running water, the Borden house did not, making Andrew’s reputation a penny pincher. Clark). On the day of August 4, 1892, the bodies of Andrew Borden and his wife were found mutilated. (History Channel). As opposed to 40 whacks, in the popular rhyme, 19 blows struck Abby Borden by a hatchet or axe to the back of her head and neck. (History Channel). At the time she was cleaning the guestroom of the family home, at 9:30 am. Andrew Borden, who had returned home around 10:30 am, after his daily business had been attended to, was napping on a couch in the parlor, when he was attacked. (Lizzie). 11 blows were struck upon Mr.Borden's head and face, to the point that one eye hung from its socket, making him unrecognizable. (History Channel). There were only two people in or about the house at the time of the killings, Lizzie Andrew Borden and Bridget Sullivan, the Borden's maid. (Clark) There is some specula tion as to others that may have been responsible for these evil acts. Among the other alleged killers is John Morse, the brother of Andrew's first wife, Emma Borden, Lizzie's elder sister. Soon after the murders, Lizzie emerged as the prime suspect after John Morse’s alibi checked out. Clark). She then was arrested and tried on three counts, the murder of Abbey, of Andrew, and of them both and, if found guilty, faced death by hanging. (Clark). What makes the Fall River murders so perplexing is that the motive, the weapon and the opportunity for such a crime are all absent. When the Fall River constabulary investigated the murders, they found no money or jewelry missing, not even small amounts of change or the packet of bus tickets as were taken in the daytime break-in at the Borden home twelve months earlier. (History Channel).There was some speculation on Andrew having a will, but no will was ever found, leaving the entire estate to Lizzie and Emma. (Clark). A local pharmaci st reported Lizzie coming into his store and asking for prussic acid or hydrogen cyanide on several different occasions two weeks prior to the murders. (Augustine). Lizzie insisted that she needed it to clean an item of clothing, but the pharmacist refused to sell it to her without a prescription. (Augustine). Also, when the bodies had been discovered many people from throughout the neighborhood were entering and exiting the crime scene and could have easily moved evidence to protect Lizzie. Clark). Besides the lack of a clear motive for the murders, there was also the perplexing lack of opportunity. Fall River found the entire Borden house locked up as usual, and during the two-and-a-half-hour period in which both murders were completed, the maid Bridget was outside the house washing windows and daughter Lizzie was inside the house reading a magazine. (History Channel). Even if one of the two committed the crime, the violent and bloody act should have been noisy enough to attract t he attention of the other. There was also not a lot of blood splatter at the crime scene. (Clark).If Lizzie were to have murdered her parents there should have been some sort of blood on Lizzie’s clothes. (Clark). The prosecution used this as a key part of their trial. They had a witness that said she saw Lizzie burning a blue dress in her kitchen and the prosecution insisted that it was the dress Lizzie killed her parent’s in. (Clark). Lizzie did in fact burn a dress and was seen doing so, but she was burning it because she had no use for it anymore because it was soiled with paint. (Clark). June 1893, Lizzie was arrested and sent to trial. The all-male jury was put into a difficult position. (Lizzie).It was the Victorian Era where women were considered delicate flowers and not capable of killing someone and it was not a common issue to deal with in those times. (History Channel). After only an hour of deliberating, the jury declared Lizzie to be not guilty. It is sai d it only took them 15 minutes to decide, but out of respect for the prosecution, they waited another 45 minutes before they informed the court of their decision. (Lizzie). Shortly after the trial, Emma and Lizzie each inherited half of their father's estate, about $200,000. 00 each, which was a large amount of money in those days. (History Channel).Their first purchase was a home on The Hill, at 7 French Street, which Lizzie named Maplecroft. (Clark). Lizzie also changed her name to Lizbeth. (Clark) Lizzie became a social outcast after the trial, with few friends remaining loyal. (History Channel). Her every move was criticized: if she appeared solemn in public, it was because she was guilt-ridden because of her crime; if she was happy, it proved she was a heartless monster. Lizzie soon had to travel farther to do her shopping, but she was not left along by reporters. (Clark). Reports after the trial of Lizzie usually were rumors, from engagements to cases of shoplifting.These pape rs never seemed willing to print tales of her good deeds, such as her many charitable donations, her aide to deserving young people who could not afford a college education. (Clark). Nor did they print stories of her love of animals, or of the arts. (Clark). The murder of Andrew and Abby Borden will forever be a cold case and one of the most gruesome crimes that could have been committed by a woman.
